Buster's Mal Heart

Buster occupies vacant holiday homes, which he leaves in perfect order without stealing anything. In a former life he was Jonah, a night clerk in a remote hotel. One day an unknown man walks in. He warns Jonah about society and the dangers of the upcoming year 2000. Enigmatic thriller about paranoia and loss is a psychological brainteaser with Lynchian touches.

After the excellent The Midnight Swim (Imagine 2015), Sarah Adina Smith has raised the bar considerately. This film has a much larger budget, and with Rami Malek (Mr. Robot) a relatively big star as its lead. But above all, Buster’s Mal Heart has much more ambition. The film revolves around the mystery of how Jonah became Buster. It shows a lot of Jonah’s former life, but the more we find out, the more the boundaries between dream, delusion and reality start to blur. And who could that man in the rowing boat at sea be?
