The Man With the Magic Box

Newly arrived Adam is employed as a cleaner and soon falls for office manager Goria. Despite their differences, they hit it off. On an old radio, Adam picks up strange messages from a past life. To unravel the mystery, he involves Goria, but the state is watching too. Retro-futuristic time travel mystery echoes a dark past and a darker present.

First time director Bodo Kox makes no secret of his influences, from Blade Runner and Brazil to the comic reference to Men in Black in the opening sequence. Creating a gorgeous retro-futuristic style, Kox doesn’t go overboard with the novelties in design and architecture, but seems to have much more fun with the old stuff, like a co-worker’s room full of old computers and analogue nostalgia. These different styles are nice frameworks for Adam’s time travelling, which provides echoes of a dark past and at the same time comments on today’s society.
