The Man With the Magic Box

Newly arrived Adam is employed as a cleaner and soon falls for office manager Goria. Despite their differences, they hit it off. On an old radio, Adam picks up strange messages from a past life. To unravel the mystery, he involves Goria, but the state is watching too. Retro-futuristic time travel mystery echoes a dark past and a darker present.

First time director Bodo Kox makes no secret of his influences, from Blade Runner, Brazil and ###i/i### to the comic reference to Men in Black in the opening sequence. Creating a gorgeous retro-futuristic style, Kox doesn’t go overboard with the novelties in design and architecture, but seems to have much more fun with the old stuff, like a co-worker’s room full of old computers and analogue nostalgia. These different styles are nice frameworks for Adam’s time travelling, which provides echoes of a dark past and at the same time comments on today’s society.
