Operation Mekong

Pirates raid two ships on the Mekong River, killing everyone on board. The Chinese government decides to intervene and put an end to the smuggling route through the ‘Golden Triangle’. Policeman Gao Gang and spy/master of disguise Fang Xinwu take on the gangsters. Dante Lam is back with an unambiguous, delightful action film with lots of flair and Chinese patriotism.

Based on a true incident from 2011, it doesn’t take Operation Mekong long to go completely over the top. At first, Lam shamelessly propagandises for the Chinese way to deal with crime, but then he devotes himself to more important matters: a film that thunders from set piece to set piece. From a long chase scene over a railway yard, via a shootout in an ultramodern shopping mall, to a Rambo-esque finale in the jungle – Lam delivers every scene with lots of flair. The Thai government was less enthralled and objected furiously to the suggestion that Thai militaries were involved in the pirate raid.
