The Survivalist

After large parts of the world’s population have been wiped out, a nameless man lives alone on a farm. One day his solitude is disrupted by the arrival of Kathryn and her daughter Milja. What follows is a laborious attempt to coexist in a world where trust has disappeared.

Surviving the apocalypse is one thing, carving out a humane and social existence afterwards is quite another. It’s a theme that runs through more films, with The Battery, El Desierto and Into the Forest being a few recent examples. Director Fingleton, who received a BAFTA nomination for his film, takes a radical approach, with long takes and little dialogue. He manages to retain the suspense throughout, aided by the fact that he only allows his actors a minimum of expression. This way you never know who is plotting what. And it makes the finale hit extra hard.
