Will You Be There?

2015. Soo-hyun works as a doctor in a war zone. A grateful old man gifts him a box of mysterious pills. In 1985, Soo-hyun is engaged to dolphin trainer Choi Yeon-a, when his thirty year older self suddenly appears in front of him with a shocking announcement. South Korean time travel film is not only cleverly made, it also expertly manipulates the emotions of the viewer.

Within the genre of time travel films where the happiness of two lovers is at stake, we of course also find the South Korean Il Mare (2000) and its remake The Lake House (2006). But just try to keep a dry eye with a film that also saddles its protagonist with a diabolical dilemma. Will You Be There?, based on a French novel by Guillaume Musso, touches on big themes, but the funny misunderstandings that occur between the two Soo-hyuns ensure that the film doesn’t become too heavy. However, do prepare yourself for a decent-sized lump in your throat.
